What a real deal costs
A worked example: you buy a car at auction for $8,000 plus auction fees, recondition it, and sell it for $12,000. Auction fees are set by the auction house and passed through at cost — Carena does not mark them up.
| Step | Calculation | Carena fee |
|---|---|---|
| Buy at auction for $8,000 + auction fees | $100 + (1% × $8,000) | $180 |
| Sell for $12,000 | Flat dealer fee | $250 |
| Total Carena fees for the deal | $430 |
Your profit on this deal
- Sale price
- $12,000
- Auction purchase
- − $8,000
- Carena fees
- − $430
- Profit before auction fees & reconditioning
- $3,570
Subtract the auction’s own fees (passed through at cost) and whatever you spend fixing the car to get your final profit. Salvage-title vehicles also add the $150 inspection.
FAQ
Common questions.
What is Carena for mechanics?
Carena helps mechanics and hobbyists buy a vehicle, fix it, and sell it. We handle the title, the paperwork, the payment, and the e-signing. Buyers shop your vehicles near them and complete the purchase online.
How does buying from auction work?
Browse Carena's built-in auction — over 600,000 vehicles — and purchase from your account. The auction's own fees are passed through at cost, and the vehicle flows straight into your inventory.
How does the vehicle get to me?
We arrange transportation from the auction to you — you don't have to coordinate carriers yourself.
What about salvage titles?
Salvage-title vehicles require a $150 inspection. You bring the vehicle to one of our inspection sites and we handle the process.
Can I sell a car I already own?
Yes. Add the vehicle to your inventory and mail us its title. Once we process it, the vehicle gets its own purchase link — your buyer reviews, pays, and signs online, and you hand over the finished paperwork.
Can I buy a vehicle from auction for myself?
Sure. Buy the vehicle, then go through its purchase link as your own customer. You get the complete document packet to register the vehicle in your name.
How does my customer pay and sign?
Your customer opens the vehicle's page, reviews the deal, pays in full or applies for financing, and signs every document electronically — all from their phone or computer.
What do I hand my customer at the end?
The finished document packet: the signed sale documents plus the completed title application paperwork. Print it, hand it over with the keys, and the sale is complete.
